CLUB PARTICULARS

Our club is composed of a band of surfing enthusiasts that persists in riding particularly prehistoric slabs of petrochemical slag - more commonly known as Old Malibus (mal - e - booze).
The club was founded in 1991 by a group of surf derelicts who used to run into and over each other whilst careering shorewards on their old dungers. Deciding, when they got out of hospital, that there was a need for a club to organise and promote this sort of mayhem regularly they set out to preserve the 'art' of Old Malibu surfboard riding by forming the Tweed Coast Old Malibu Club.
An 'old mal' is any surfcraft over nine foots in longth, having attained 30 years of abuseage. The use of mechanical appliances is not permitted and the wearing of restraints is a subject for continuous dissent. Riders can be any silly idiot keen enough to lug an old log out to sea, turn it around and ride it back in again.
At a special meeting on July 10, 1997 a management committee of the club passed a special management committee resolution to incorporate the club under the Queensland Associations Incorporation Act 1981.
At that meeting it was agreed that the 'object' or constitution of the club was :
"To preserve the art of Old Malibu surfboard riding"
It was also agreed that there would be no rules, apart from those in the 'Model Club Rules' set down by the Consumer Affairs Office. Reason being that there can be no rules as to the way to have fun and also that if there are no rules, then no-one can get shirty about someone breakin' the rules. However, it was decided that there should be a gentlemans' (an' womans) agreement that the equipment used should be genuine, pre 1968 manufactured surfboards measuring over nine foot ( two and a bit metres) long and weighin' in the region of 'arf-a ton.
Because there being no rules some members have gotten special dispensation from their publicans to ride mals that are just a little bit short (8'11 15/16ths"). Doesn't matter Cocky! As long as you reckon that it's that old!
RALLYS
Rallys are held six times a year on the second Sunday of the even numbered months. That's about as organised as we get. The roll call/heat draw is taken at 7am ('roach (NSW) time) behind the Kingscliff Bowlo (Bowls Club for the uninitiated) at Kingscliff Beach (a pichuresk little seaside villiage about 10 minutes drive south of Coolangatta Airport). A 'comp fee' of $2 is collected so someone can nick around to the butchers fer some snags ter chuck on the barby after the 'competition's all done and finish. Heats are surfed in the best waves we can find in the area (which is renowned for almost always having waves of some description. Not that description Cocky!) All's welcome.
MEMBERSHIP
The club subscription is $25 due on the August rally annually. It was formerly acceptable to lob along with a slab of cold stubbies (beer) but due to the legal requirements, bookkeeping problems and devaluation of the aforementioned slabs we can no longer accept slabs. For this trifling outlay members recieve an item of limited edition clothing, usually a club t-shirt but this year Camel has organised embroidered caps. Paid up members also recieve a copy of our newsletter detailling the exploits of the S.O.S.B's and various other items of innerest to Old Malibu fanatics.
